Salt Lake 911 Call Center Back to Sheriff
The Salt Lake Tribune informs us that Salt Lake County will have changes in its 911 emergency response call centers.
The current setup for the county of Utah’s capital is a unified emergency call center. The Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) was established to handle all 911 calls for Salt Lake County, except calls originating from Salt Lake City itself. But the Salt Lake County Sheriff wants to change that.
Two concerns prompted the sheriff to pull away from the VECC. First, there is a one- to two-minute delay before emergency responders are deployed, because the VECC has to transfer the calls to the sheriff’s office. Second, there isn’t a redundant 911 system in place.
Not everyone is on board with the sheriff’s plans. Some of the politicians involved think that the county should work with the VECC longer to establish a better, comprehensive call center for everyone.
